UN inaction persistsa and Darfur crimes too

On 28th Dec. 2007 during the Synod, Bishop Riak called for replacement of Santino Akook with someone else. This idea caused high tension between him and Aweil West pastors. Nevertheless after he realized that his suggestion has been opposed and finally rejected by Aweil West priests, he sent them away by force and announced the name of a certain priest as Archdeacon for Aweil West to replace Santino B. Akook. In my conclusion, Riak does not need active people to challenge his weak leadership such as Bol Akook who has started the construction of clinic as shown below.

Santino Bol is characterized with good leadership which gives community clear goals for it to function well. He has managed to identify a suitable project leader, motivated, trained, and supported by the community to avoid future rejection of the project by the community.

Review: Palm's Small, Cheap Centro

Palm Inc.'s flagship smart phone is the Treo, which has been pretty popular since it was introduced in 2002. But recently, competitors have edged in on its niche. The BlackBerry is now available in models that don't immediately make you look like a corporate e-mail slave. Apple Inc.'s iPhone has made a splash with an interface so beautiful it makes you feel like you're holding a still pond in your hand.

The Centro is Palm's way of fighting back, by making a Treo that's smaller, cuter and cheaper. It's just $99 with a two-year Sprint contract (after a mail-in rebate), making it probably the cheapest smart phone yet. It would have been more interesting if Palm fought back by revamping its outdated software, but if small and cheap are on sale, I'll take it.

Remarkably, the Centro makes few compromises despite the smaller size — there's about a third of an inch less of it in every dimension compared with the Treo 700p, from last year.

Hanebrands profit rises on higher sales

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Underwear and hosiery maker Hanesbrands Inc. said Thursday its profit more than doubled in its fourth quarter as a result of increased sales and cost-reduction efforts.

Quarterly net income for the Winston-Salem-based apparel maker totaled $49.8 million, or 52 cents per share, for the three months ended Dec. 29 versus $23.8 million, or 25 cents per share, a year ago.

The maker of Hanes Brand underwear and the Wonderbra said revenue grew 2.4 percent to $1.16 billion, from $1.13 billion during the year ago period.

The three analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected profits of 39 cents per share. Estimates typically exclude one-time charges.

A hollow political economy?

Two different theories of history compete for our attention. One supports military rule, or stratocracy, and the other one supports peoples rule, or democracy. For simplicity, lets dub them Theories S and D.

Theory S argues that it was necessary to fire the Chief Justice because he was corrupt and out to derail the democratic process. It blames the attorneys for creating a mess which made the emergency inevitable. It argues that Musharraf acted in the national interest, not in his personal interest. Theory D argues that it was Musharrafs political ambition to continue as president for another five years that set in motion the disastrous chain of events which began with the decision to suspend the Chief Justice.

This duel between competing theories of history is not unique to Pakistan.

Passings: Richard Rorty

As author/historian Todd Gitlin noted in his blog commentary, Richard Rorty, 1931 - 2007: "In person, Rorty did not let tough-mindedness stand in the way of graciousness, or vice versa. His political convictions, on the democratic Left, were unwavering and deep."

And as associate/author Danny Postel wrote online in 'Last Words from Richard Rorty' http://www.progressive.org/mag_postel0607>: " 'In articles on public education, market fundamentalism, and the Iraq War,' the historian Casey Blake recently observed, 'Rorty has emerged as one of our most eloquent and impassioned public intellectuals a model of what Michael Walzer has called a 'connected critic,' an intellectual who implores his fellow citizens to live up to the moral values they claim to hold dear.'"

In the same short-lived interview, Postel, revealing a similar Left-leaning mindset by Rorty on Iraq, quoted the philosopher: "'Before 9/11 I would have said that the principal area in which democratic institutions needed improvements is the old familiar one: we need to put those institutions to use in order to level the life-chances of poor children and rich children.

Salmond set for moves to reunite Lewis Chessmen north of Border

I believe that I am the only living Bruce descendant who knows the location of five spots where things were buried by my Great-Grandfather, Robert C. Bruce, on his old property in West Virginia, US. These are items which he brought with him on the boat when he immigrated to the US in 1881.How would Alex Salmand like for very old BRUCE ARMOUR AND A BRUCE SHIELD to be returned to Scotland to be placed in a Scottish museum?I am very serious. Can someone tell me who to contact, how to contact Alex Salmand, or get someone to contact me?Before my father died he left me with a special "secret map" depicting five spots where things were buried on the property that once belonged to my Great-Grandfather, Robert C. Bruce.--------For many years I did not know what the map meant, or even think about or remember the map.
