Escambia commission revises ethics policy

Escambia County commissioners on Thursday had the largest county meeting agenda ever. That's partly because they hadn't met for a regular meeting since Nov. 1.Here's some highlights from the meeting. The board unanimously approved:- Revisions to the county's ethics policy, most of which address questionable business dealings and disclosure issues by former County Administrator George Touart. They take effect Jan. 1.County commissioners in September requested the county's ethics policy be revised to help head off future ethical issues like the one that ended in Touart's sudden resignation on Sept. 6. The county's ethics policy has been in place since March 2004.Some of the revisions will apply to all county employees who work under the Board of County Commissioners, while most target senior management.- Travel expenses for Commissioner Gene Valentino to travel to Jacksonville to research consolidated government.

AC360°: Flirting with disaster

There were supposed to be pictures tonight to give you a view of the control room from the back row. The photos didn't happen because of late word from Chicago that a decomposed body, which could be that of Stacy Peterson, had been found at an industrial site in Chicago. However, If you had gotten those pictures you would have seen: - our satellites coordinator, Brooke Turnbull, with multiple phones plastered to his ears, making sure that the two late guests and two late phoners actually made air at the top of the show - our video coordinator, Ashley Corum, frantically cutting new video of investigators at the site that was being fed in from the field - our line producer, Jenny Blanco, doing rundown aerobics to make sure the hour did not become a 90 minutes showIn the end, Brooke got us the guests, Ashley got us the pics and Jenny got us out on time.

Timber! Surfers can’t see beach for the trees

A beach was closed yesterday after hundreds of tons of timber were washed ashore.

It fell from the deck of the Ice Prince before the freighter sank in rough weather off Portland Bill in Dorset on Tuesday. Planks were piled several feet deep on the tide line at Worthing, West Sussex. The clear-up is expected to continue for most of the week.

Timber was also washed ashore along a seven-mile stretch east of Selsey Bill, East Sussex. Fred Caygill, spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, said: "Pockets of timber have been coming ashore in certain areas, but Worthing was hit the hardest."

Jeff Thelen's Blog

Thought you'd like this one. At church a few weeks back, a couple renewed their wedding vows to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. The preacher asked them where they were married. The groom replied "Saint So-and-sos. And a short time after our wedding the church burned down and the priest died." Without missing a beat my preacher said "Would you mind if we did this outside?"

I had the luck of being at the Packer game last Sunday. What a game and what a day! After spotting the Seahawks 14-points, the Packers looked like an absolutely unstoppable team. And when that snow fell down, it was like being inside a snow globe, you couldn't see the people who were sitting in the stands on the other side of the stadium. But it wasn't cold! In fact, I kept my gloves off for most of the game.
