Layne Beachley, a native of Sydney, Australia and the most successful woman in professional surfing history, is set to make a series of media appearances on behalf of Tourism New South Wales during G'DAY USA: Australia Week 2008. Highlights include an exclusive luncheon on Jan. 17 where Layne and the Hon. Matt Brown MP, Minister for Tourism for the State of New South Wales, will present a viewing of "Sydney - Life's a Beach", an inspiring visual journey into the lifestyle of this dynamic travel destination. Layne, a Sydney resident, offers valuable insight into its unique urban beach culture. With more than 1200 miles of stunning beaches and legendary surf breaks surrounded by 600 national parks, Sydney, is one of the world's most visually appealing destinations. According to Minister Brown, Layne is a wonderful ambassador for all things Sydney.
Elle Macpherson is new face of WA sunscreen
A PERTH company has dumped local model Megan Gale in favour of Elle Macpherson as the face of a top-selling sunscreen for its launch in the US. Macpherson, 44, took time out from her Down Under beach holiday with sons Flynn, 9, and four-year-old Cy to sign a long-term deal with the company and shoot a TV commercial and print campaign last week. Andrea Horwood-Bux, founder of Invisible Zinc, said Macpherson was chosen for the US launch because she was an Australian icon and well known in America. Gale, 32, has been brand ambassador in Australia since its launch in 2004. Her face is used on boxes in the Australian range and her name is on some products. Macpherson's face will not be used on boxes in the US, but she will regularly represent the brand on a home-shopping cable channel when Invisible Zinc is launched in May.
Calling for Yahoo to get bold
Mitra and many others in Silicon Valley are rooting for Yahoo to roar back and capitalize on its status as the Web's most popular destination, if for no other reason than to keep Google in check. But, she said, she's not optimistic. "Yahoo has a great opportunity still because it has tremendous traffic and a tremendous brand," said Mitra, who posted her analysis on the popular technology blog GigaOM. "But it can't figure out what it wants to be when it grows up." A clear vision that plays to the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company's fundamental strengths is what investors want from co-founder Jerry Yang, who replaced Terry Semel as chief executive over the summer. But instead of defining a bold road map, Yang offered broad strokes: Yahoo would aim to become the starting point for Internet users and a must buy for advertisers.

Pets' diet, weight is largely up to owners
Unfortunately for those of us living domesticated lives, weight is no laughing matter. As more Americans struggle with obesity, there's an unsurprising result for the pets sitting on the couch with us: About a third of American pets are overweight, according to some studies. "Sadly, our companion animals reflect our lifestyle. If you're sedentary, there's a pretty good chance your dog is sedentary, too," Fitzgerald says. Carrying too much weight affects nearly every system of the body - joints, heart, respiratory system, even skin - as well as your pet's life span. The good news is that, unlike other health issues, here you can make a difference. For pets and people, the solution is simple, if not easy: Burn more, eat less. Fortunately, your dog or cat can't work the can opener; you're in control.
TheStar.com | Travel | A place where anything goes – s'more or less
No one who passes us as we cook, and then eat the sticky mess bats an eye. There are two reasons. Firstly, this is Palm Springs, an oasis born out of sand and rock. The town where Frank Sinatra had a pool built in the shape of a piano, where George and Brad and the boys filmed much of Ocean's Eleven, where much of the population may be older but certainly doesn't look it (thanks in part to a booming plastic surgery market). Roasting marshmallows in a hotel lobby seems normal here. The second reason? This is the Parker. A funky hotel whose sister New York property has always been a hot spot for socialites, celebrities and an almost-anything-goes vibe. If any hotel was going to let this happen, this is the one. Designed by Jonathan Adler to give the feel of an eccentric aunt's home, there are two words that stay with me during the visit: colour and kitsch.
