Kodak's picture not so rosy beneath the headlines

This Perez guy may have a future as general manager of the Minnesota Twins! Furthermore, the bottom line got a nice bump from a tremendous drop in the provision for income taxes to $17 million from $126 million in the fourth quarter of 2006.

Ultimately, Kodak's old film businesses will go to nothing and its digital businesses, including the growing ink-jet printer effort, will keep growing. But the old biz was highly profitable — it showed a 15% profit margin in the quarter for 2006 and 9% in 2007. The new biz is much less cushy - with a fourth quarter margin of 4% the past two years. Kodak's commercial graphics business likewise shows a 3% margin in the fourth quarter. And just stop and think about it for a minute: Kodak is growing in markets that are ultra-competitive, require lots of R&D spending to stay current and offer cut-throat margins.

Detainee fallout: take few, free quickly

Wind and waves, a poet laureate, and tough policing

As we enter the new year, some issues remain doggedly at the island's heels just as they were a year ago: the Champlin's affair, state budget constraints and high energy costs. But we also had some unexpected and welcomed turns: a potential solution to those energy problems, a state poet laureate selected from our ranks, and a busy summer held in check by competent police work. Some of the most exciting announcements — with the potential to change life on the island — occurred in the last few weeks of 2007.Wind and waves to the rescueAfter Governor Donald Carcieri announced his goal to provide a minimum of 15 percent of the state's electricity from renewable sources, wind energy ended being high on that list. The state commissioned a study, and Rhode Island Commissioner of Energy Resources Andrew Dzykewicz announced in a series of on-island presentations that two of the prime locations for a wind farm are off the shores of Block Island. If approved, said Dzykewicz, there could be as many as 100 wind turbines, standing 450 feet high with blades extended, complete with foghorns and lights, anywhere from a mile to three miles south of the island.

Welcome to the fabulous consumer electronics show

Best Buy Inc.'s chief executive says he is "very nervous" about being able to supply customers with the millions of digital TV converter boxes needed ahead of the shutdown of most analog TV transmissions in 13 months.

"I think it's one of the biggest risks our industry has," vice chairman and CEO Brad Anderson told an industry audience at the CES.

Full-power television stations will turn off their analog signal on Feb. 17, 2009, after which they will broadcast in digital only.

Viewers who receive their signals through an antenna instead of cable or satellite and don't have a digital-ready TV will have to buy a converter.

Apart from the supply issue, customer education looms as a problem for the retailers. Speaking on the same panel, Phil Schoonover, the CEO of Circuit City Stores Inc.

Interview with Tadashi Yanai

But now they're back, and because he's got control, he can realize that vision, no one is going to say no.

AR: Welcome to the show, it's wonderful to have you with us today. What kind of person do you have to be to be able to build an empire like this?

TY: One should have an ambition, an ideal. It can be applied to anything, but unless you have a strong will to make it happen, or a dream to create a company you wish to see, it is impossible to expand your company.

AR: People say that you're not like the typical Japanese CEO and that you're unapologetic. Do you think that those characteristics have perhaps helped to get you where you are today?

TY: I don't think the conventional management that Japanese companies had was effective, Japanese companies have to train themselves, starting from now.
