| SEVERE WEATHER TEAM 9 BLOG
If you have a passion for weather, you've come to the right place. We'll use this forum to discuss Ohio Valley weather in greater detail and answer as many weather questions as possible. You can send in your questions to weather@wtov.com. JANUARY 28, 2008: HYPOTHERMIA Hypothermia occurs when more heat escapes from your body than your body can produce. Signs and symptoms of hypothermia may include gradual loss of mental and physical abilities. Severe hypothermia can lead to death. For most people, hypothermia isn't a serious risk. Still, each year nearly 700 people in the United States die of hypothermia. Prolonged exposure to cold air or cold water temperatures are common causes. When you're outdoors enjoying such activities as camping, hunting, fishing, boating and skiing, be aware of weather conditions and whether you or others with you are wet and cold.
Making MySpace Safer
Vermont is one of 49 states to reach an agreement with the social networking giant, MySpace, that will make it safer for teens to surf the site. The settlement comes after an investigation showed sexual predators were using MySpace to target victims, but most kids in the Green Mountain State don't worry about what they put online, who is going to see it, or who might try to contact them. "I keep my MySpace page private, and like, the profile picture isn't a really good shot of me, so people couldn't really tell who I am anyway. Yeah, I don't really let any random person see personal stuff about me online," said Eliza Rainville. But officials say that teens have reason for concern. "We have been notified that there have been offenders posting profiles, have been notified that solicitations have occurred through MySpace," said Detective Sergeant Kris Carlson, the director of the Chittenden Unit for Special Investigation.
The Weedpatch Gazette
Regardless of whom you end up supporting in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, a Fred Thompson candidacy is good for the Republican Party, and you should encourage him to run." The Democrat Party, the Democrat controlled universities, the blatantly left-wing bias of the MSM, all would be gunning for Fred should he choose to run for President. And like Lou Dobbs, perhaps Fred is too smart to run. Both can be forgiven the attitude "Who needs the grief?" But if Fred is persuaded America needs him, as so many of us believe, I hold hope he will be willing to make the sacrifice. And at least in Fred’s case there can be no doubt it would be exactly that: A sacrifice. But whether he does or not, of this much we can be certain: With each passing day the world is becoming increasingly dangerous.

BEE MOVIE (5674) This film gets an A-plus. Jerry Seinfeld's venture into the world of animated comedy successfully breaks new ground for him while reminding us why his sitcom was one of the funniest programs in TV history. ★★★★ (C.C.) 90 mins. PG, suggestive humor. BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD (5691) Sidney Lumet's exceptional crime saga is as full of entangled meanings as its name. ★★★★ (C.C.) 117 mins. R, graphic sexuality, nudity, violence, drug use, language. THE BUCKET LIST (5743) In this stillborn comedy, Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman play terminally ill men chasing their dreams on a round-the-world trip. It's terribly earnest, terribly well-intentioned -- and terrible. ★ 1/2 (C.C.) 97 mins. PG-13, language, sexual reference. CASSANDRA'S DREAM (5750) Woody Allen crafts a taut thriller about two brothers (Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor) drawn into a crime.
Surf beach honoured, but Turnbull wiped out
BONDI beach has joined Sydney's Opera House and Harbour Bridge on the National Heritage list but Malcolm Turnbull, who was instrumental in its nomination, was snubbed at yesterday's announcement. The listing, the nomination process for which was first announced last October by the local MP, then the environment minister, ensures the area is protected from overdevelopment. At Bondi yesterday, Environment Minister Peter Garrett ignored his predecessor, who was sitting in the front row of an assembly of luminaries and Bondi characters -- from lifesavers to the winter swimming group the Bondi Icebergs. Mr Garrett said he was proud to make the announcement, but omitted Mr Turnbull's role in getting Bondi beach listed, as he delivered an eloquent tribute to the beauty and romance of the famous stretch of sand.
Dalton column: Sledding when they closed the streets
When Whittier Street extended all the way to Bartlet Street, Andover kids would sled on the little slope in front of Memorial Auditorium. The slope was bigger when we were little. In the late 1940, the town would close off Whittier Street to make it safe for us. Sometimes it would forget to close the street and one day a kid hit the side of a slow moving car. He hit one of the tires and was only scared and not hurt very much. The town always closed the street after that. The setup of the area was different then. Besides the fact that Whittier Street was just a plain old street with no parking spaces, there was a semicircular driveway that went up from the street to the front of Memorial Auditorium and then curved down back to the street. The slope was within that semicircle formed by the driveway.
'Affair to Remember' celebrates 50th
"An Affair to Remember: 50th Anniversary Edition": It doesn't get much classier than Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr in the story of a playboy (Grant) and former lounge singer (Kerr) who meet on a cruise ship and fall for each other. One hitch: They're both engaged to other people. They agree to rendezvous atop the Empire State Building six months later to decide if they're meant to be together. This two-disc edition features a new digital transfer of the film, commentary by vocalist Marni Nixon and film historian Joseph McBride plus features focused on Grant, Kerr, director Leo McCarey and more. (Unrated) "Dragonlance: Dragons of the Autumn Twilight": This is an animated flick based on Dungeons and Dragons-inspired franchise. It features the voices of Kiefer Sutherland, Lucy Lawless and others.
Johann Hari: There is a way to save the rainforests
An area the size of Belgium, taking thousands of years to evolve, was destroyed in the past year alone. Some 20 per cent of the forest has now been trashed, with a further 40 per cent set to be slashed in my lifetime. This is steadily happening to all the rainforests on earth. Long after we have forgotten who won the Florida primary or precisely why Peter Hain resigned from the Cabinet, people will be living with the consequences of this news. The rainforests – with the Amazon by far the largest – are the planet's air conditioner. They suck up millions of tons of greenhouse gases and store them safely out of the atmosphere. But as we hack them down, they are releasing these warming gases. Soon, we will reach a point where there is so much carbon in the atmosphere that the system will pack in and stop extracting anything at all.
