| Parma girls defy expectations
The Parma High girls basketball team had not been to state in nine years before the 2006-07 squad finished sixth at the 2A tournament last February. With only three full-time lettermen back from that team and one senior left on the roster, expectations around town weren't high for the 2007-08 season. "I even had parents in our community saying 'Oh, you guys aren't going to be real successful this year,' because we were so young," Parma coach Monique Jensen said. "So we won the first three games and I told the girls, 'You go home and tell your parents and anybody who doubted us, they need to change their opinion.' "The Panthers (17-3) clinched the 2A Western Idaho Conference title with two games remaining in the regular season and are the league's top seed in the 2A District Three Tournament, which began Tuesday.Parma kicks off tournament play Thursday when it hosts Nampa Christian (11-10) in the semifinals.
Jaime Wright signs deal with surfwear giant Hot Tuna
HER claim to fame has been fronting for a local beer brand, but Bondi Blonde babe Jaime Wright was popping the champagne this week after landing herself a deal with surfwear giant Hot Tuna. The 27-year-old posed for the label's latest clothing campaign on the streets of Bondi and Paddington yesterday, ahead of inking the deal as the Aussie face of the brand in Las Vegas next month. While her first foray into the international fashion market hit a hurdle last year when Paris Hilton reportedly pulled out of an endorsement arrangement for Wright's own shoe brand, it appears to have laid the groundwork for her Hot Tuna gig. "Dean Harrigan (the CEO of Hot Tuna in Australia) lent me his boat, Playstation, after I did a bit of modelling work for him. We shot my shoe campaign on it and after that he came to me with the offer," she told Confidential.
Dawg! Idol is back!
And no, I'm not talking about anything political. I'm talking about "American Idol." Fox TV's unstoppable gawk-fest of a show has been by far the No. 1-rated series on U.S. television for its past three seasons, despite the almost inarguable fact that -- after its previous three seasons -- it became as repetitious and predictable as an episode of "Three's Company" (coincidentally or not, the top show of 1979). Those of us who hate or are just plain bored to death with "Idol" always think/hope/pray that this season will finally be the one where it tanks. But it never happens. Our wishes are even more of a pipe dream this year, since the current Hollywood writers' strike is accomplishing what "Idol" set out to do: abolishing all shows of substance from U.S. television.
Viewers' Comments On Randy Salerno - Part 18
Viewers share their thoughts and memories of CBS 2 Morning anchor Randy Salerno, who passed away in a snowmobiling accident late Thursday night. I speak to my Mother at least 3 times a day. When I spoke with her last Friday, I could tell she seemed down, as was I, after hearing the news of my "friend" Randy Salerno. I asked my Mom what was the matter and she replied, "oh, my favorite news guy that I watch at 11:00 am everyday from Channel 2 was killed in an accident." I replied, "well, my favorite news guy that I watch at 6:00 am everyday from Channel 2 was killed in an accident." Just when you think you know everything there is to know about someone, you find out something new. Thanks, Randy, for deepening my relationship with my Mother one more degree. --Amy Deegan Everyday my daughter and myself watched Randy, and it has touched us very deeply, but I would like to let his family know that he is in a better place with God.
Spice Girls: The interview
ALL around the perimeter of the M.E.N. Arena are stalls selling gaudy tat - furry stetsons, plastic sceptres and feather boas. Yards away, inside a security compound, a silver-grey Rolls Royce slides into a parking space and a slender figure in expensively-frayed jeans and a blue Confederate-style cap saunters into the arena. The Spice Girls and all their celeb-tastic entourage - including that man David Beckham - are back in town. It is like a glimmer of the Manchester of the 1990s, when Becks would be spotted daily in a posh car and Posh would be spotted round the shops{hellip}the days before the paparazzi chased Coleen instead. "I have such fond memories of living in Manchester," says Victoria Beckham. "So I'm really excited to be here, and I've got all three kids with me and David. And some of his friends from the team are here to spice up their lives{hellip}or slice up their wives." Gales of laughter erupt among the fivesome.
Lone rangers
We needed to kick the digital side along and we decided that we needed outside support and help," says Wheeler. For many, the sale of Lonely Planet will signal the impending death of the guide book but Wheeler is not convinced the digital world is yet as convenient as an old-fashioned paperback. "The hardware isn't there yet but who knows?" Looking back on how Lonely Planet has changed the world - coaxing travellers into ever more remote corners - Wheeler denies he's been responsible for the ruination of previously unvisited treasures. "The accusation is there was this beautiful, unspoilt, simple little place and then we did a guidebook and now it's overrun with tourists. That's obviously not true because if people can't get there they won't visit. The airport didn't get built because we wrote a guidebook but our guidebook is a factor in the world situation." So what will the Wheelers do now? "Travel is deeply in my blood.
Domestic Spying
Cenk Uygur: Why Do You Need Immunity If You Haven't Broken the Law? (1 comments) The Bush administration is desperately trying to get immunity for the telecom companies inserted into the next wiretapping bill. But let me ask a simple question - why would the telecom companies need immunity if they didn't break the law? I'm not trying to be clever here. I'm asking a literal question. Isn't this an obvious admission that the administration did ask the large telecommunication companies to break the law ? Tuesday, October 9: Dave Lindorff: What are Progressives Waiting For? (8 comments) The Democrats have made it clear: They're not going to end the war, and they're not going to impeach. They're not even going to stop the spying on Americans. How much more abuse do progressives plan to stand for? Dean Powers: On Wiretapping, Democrats Ask Bush: "Would You Like it Gift-Wrapped?" (6 comments) Rooting for the Democrats is like rooting for the Chicago Cubs...
