Chasm widens between rich and poor in U.S.

I agree with Darren from Atlanta wholeheartedly. But then I'm a little biased, I suppose, since I was a college drop out surf bum who found himself washing windows for a buck in my mid-twenties and living in my van. That was a result of stupid choices I made thirty years ago. Eventually I got motivated, tired of going nowhere, and knowing nothing but surfing and washing windows, I got off my as* and got motivated. Before too long and after knocking on at least a thousand doors my window washing business soon had a dozen local college students working evenings, then it turned into a janiotorial service for business offices and banks. Now my company cleans some of the largest buildings in Southern California and I have over 200 employees whom I treat well and fairly, and my family lives "The American Dream" - a high school drop out who started out washing windows and living in his van is now a millionaire.

Tiscali adds mobile service with Toucan rebrand

The company is in discussions with all major mobile operators as it seeks to rent network capacity.

The launch will involve a rebranding of Toucan Mobile, which Tiscali acquired last summer when it bought the consumer internet and voice arm of Pipex for £210m.

Toucan currently leases space on T-Mobile's network, but has accumulated only around 7,000 customers and the contract with T-Mobile has less than a year to run.

"The assessment is not if, but when. The business case has already been approved by the board," said Mary Turner, chief executive of Tiscali.

It is expected that Tiscali will create a four-play package of broadband, TV, landline and mobile.

The service is due at the end of 2008, and will be Sim only meaning that Tiscali will not be involved in subsidising mobile handsets for its customers.

Have a fab February

It's a good thing 2008 is a Leap Year. February is looking to be quite the food month what with Super Bowl, Chinese New Year, Mardi Gras, Valentine's Day and the celebration of Black History Month. If you plan to weigh in on the celebrations, you're going to need a game plan. First, don't start off the week by stuffing yourself with a lot of calories. (Thanks to the pizza, chips-and-dip snacking and beer drinking, the caloric intake on Super Bowl Sunday is greater than any other other day of the year except Thanksgiving.) But there are still ways you can participate in the party without packing on the pounds.

Here are some ideas for kicking off the month with some fine fare. And just remember, if you watch what you eat this week, you'll still have room for the Valentine candy.

AOL Works To Allay Fears of Behaviorally Targeted Ads

With behaviorally targeted advertising becoming more and more popular, some Internet users are wishing to remain anonymous. AOL is planning an effort to educate users about the technology, as well as offer new ways to opt out.

The internet company is hoping to educate the public more about this method of advertising in hopes that Internet users will become more apt to participate. Ads using the technology are set to become a large part of the AOL banner ad network by the end of the year.

Stoked--Mavericks becomes friendly competition

The sixth Mavericks Surf Contest showed the world that surfers still run the show out at Pillar Point.Despite all the hoopla and festival crowds, it all came down to a small pack of board riders - friends, alone in the ocean. After spending the morning fighting to get the final - and a chance at a $30,000 payday - the surfers decided to call off the competition."We paddled out and 10 minutes went by and there were no waves," said Tyler Smith, who would place fourth in his fourth Mavericks contest after chasing down more than his share of steep but mid-sized waves to reach the final heat of six.The finalists, a mix of canny veterans and young chargers, knew the tide was rising and the swell dropping. Lulls between sets had been getting longer. They decided the dwindling waves were not enough to crown a true champ.
