| O'Neill Signs Surfing Phenom Jordy Smith
WARMOND, The Netherlands, Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- O'Neill proudly announces the addition of South African surfer Jordy Smith to their team. At 19 years old, Smith is the reigning Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Junior World Champion and currently leads the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) ratings with an all-time points record exceeding 14,000. O'Neill's signing of Smith pairs him with the original surf brand and solidifies his position as one of surfing's top competitors. After taking the surfing world by storm in recent years, Smith has thrilled critics by competing successfully against the global surfing elite and racking up some of the most prestigious WQS titles along the way. Following his total domination on the tour this year -- including victories on four different continents -- the Durban native has already guaranteed himself a spot on the ASP World Tour 2008.
Dallas, I love you, but I've found Austin
Being the director of your own music school can have its positive results outside of work, especially if you front a band in your spare time. "I make music all day long with children and adults, and the enthusiasm from that energizes me to jam all night," says David Hall, who prefers to be addressed as Dirt when he's leading Dirt and Earthy Vibes. Hailing from Grapevine, Dirt and crew have been performing together since 2003, releasing a debut effort that same year. The band's varied sophomore release, Messages2Mine, released early last year, is the result of a more concerted effort. Boiled down from more than 40 songs, the extra work proved well worth it. Throwing together influences as diverse as Hendrix, Marley, Beck and Outkast, Dirt and Earthy Vibes succeeds with such a mixture when many bands would end up noodling their way to a deadhead nowhere.

Between the Lines Latest Post | Last 10 Posts | Archives Facebook's social pyramid schemers Posted in: General Social networking Facebook Guest post: Chris Matyszczyk laments the way some Facebook applications behave, creating what he calls "pre-pubescent pyramid selling." I have friends who seem to have a strangely close relationship with Facebook. Even though their profile says they are "in a relationship," they seem to spend a vast amount of time and mental space in living the social networking dream. The other day, two friends of mine sent me quizzes. One asked me to name movies from screenshots. The other wanted me to identify car logos (Flixster). It brought me an overwhelming two hundred seconds of fascination.
Similarities to other massacres - but this was a very Finnish affair
In the old days Finns used to believe in the dark power of Tuonela, the mythical land of the dead. Now they believe in YouTube, the land of the virtual living. The crazed marginalised teenager who takes out his frustration on his teachers and schoolmates, who chases them through classrooms like mice in a maze, has become a universal phenomenon: the massacres at Virginia Tech, Columbine and Erfurt in Germany conformed to a pattern. A pupil is snubbed, is deemed a failure, and retreats into an interior world that structured by his computer, video games that tap his inner aggressions, throbbing downloaded music and a locked room. .
An Artist for Life
Her work in Cairo began when she came to assist her sister — who works in furniture design, murals and trompe l'oiel — on design and interior decoration projects. “I started working with my sister, but Janan isn't actually a fine artist, she works in furniture and mural design. Basically when I came back from New York, I came to help her out. She trusted my taste," says Shihada. “I learned about paint as a material, I was always into drawing and sketching and into anatomy. She helped me know what materials are available. I got into it through her, but she has a whole team working under her, I don't. But so far I have taken jobs that I liked." Parrish: The Thoughts
Notable game scheduled for the weekend: I'm here in Los Angeles for Saturday's showdown between Southern California and UCLA that will provide the first of at least two matchups between freshmen stars O.J. Mayo and Kevin Love. It'll feature a sold-out crowd at Pauley Pavilion, and though the Trojans are clear underdogs, this is a crucial contest for Tim Floyd. If he loses, his star-studded team will drop to 1-4 in the Pac-10. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS. .
APPLE CORED ON WEAK EARNINGS OUTLOOK
However, earlier in the day the stock was off as much as 18 percent before partially clawing its way back ahead of the closing bell. The decline in Apple's stock marks a stark reversal of fortunes over the last month. The company's shares are down 31.5 percent since hitting a high of $202.96 in late December, in keeping with broader market trends. "We believe Apple would be negatively impacted by a further slowdown in consumer spending," Morgan Keegan technology analyst Travis McCourt said in a note yesterday. Apple issued a forecast on Tuesday that profits in the current quarter will rise 8 percent to 94 cents a share, and sales growth will slow to 29 percent- estimates below analysts' expectations and viewed by company watchers as a conservative reaction to the threat of an economic downturn.
