Quakertown schools may tap into Internet classes

The VHS program is part of a broader initiative to help students become successful in the 21st century, Andrejko said.

''We're teaching kids right now to prepare them for jobs that don't exist yet,'' she said. ''Technology is moving so fast, and we must find ways to keep up.''

Quakertown administrators also are working to expand a dual enrollment program offered through Lehigh Carbon Community College.

''We're working with Bucks County Community College and DeSales University to offer college classes kids can take right here while they're working toward graduating high school,'' Andrejko said.

In other business, school directors voted 9-0 to offer students in grades nine through 12 a pre-engineering program called Project Lead the Way.

Sharks sighted off beaches

OCEAN bathers will be closely watching the waves after three shark sightings off Manning beaches within a fortnight.

Surf lifesavers at Crowdy Head and Black Head have both reacted to shark sightings during patrol hours while a fisherman had a close encounter with a shark at Harrington.

The regular local beach angler had the shock of his life when a shark suddenly beached itself a couple of metres from where he and his two dogs were standing.

The incident happened late last week as the fisherman was casting into a deep hole along the beach between Harrington and Crowdy Head.

There was no prior warning of what was about to happen, when suddenly the shark surged onto the sand, obviously chasing a school of fish.

Most of the sharks body was out of the water and on the sand, and he estimated it to be about two metres long.

Roughing it, Hawaiian style

I'm not one for tropical resorts and lounging on the beach. Backpacking 40 miles of Alaskan wilderness is more my style.

So I'd never really thought of Hawaii as the ideal vacation destination, until my husband, Mark, told me about his dream trip: backpack the challenging Na Pali Coast on the northern Hawaiian island of Kauai.

Called the Garden Isle, Kauai -- home to the wettest spot on earth -- is known for having more rain and being less touristy than other Hawaiian islands.

We decided to spend 10 days here last month, and we'd make our trip even more interesting by foregoing the rental car and bringing our bicycles instead. We planned to bike 30 miles north from the east coast town of Kapa'a to the Na Pali Coast, backpack for five days, and keep the last few days open for any surprises.

Surfrider's Art for the Oceans raises over $300,000 in NYC

Is it me, or are boards getting expensive these days? Remember used singlefins for $50? How about when "expensive" new epoxy boards were $385? Try picking a new 6'2 off the rack these days. $475? What kinda bro deal is that?

Well, break it down. The shop makes $100. Fair enough. There's the $100 blank, $30 for shipping, and $20 for that dope paint job. Figure the shaper has to pay his rent, and make a few bucks an hour. That leaves him about $100, and he still has to pay a guy to come up with reasons why your board's not done.

Sounds like a steal when you hear Joel Tudor refer to a board and say, "$75,000? Are you f@#$%n' kidding me?"

Let me put that in context. On Saturday night, at an upscale Chelsea, New York City art gallery, 38 surfboards were sold to the highest bidders at the Art for the Oceans Auction.
