'History is ours' the campaign memo told Giuliani. And yesterday he ...

He would then bounce forward to claim the other big states, including California, New York and New Jersey, on Super Tuesday, February 5.

But by the time his rivals reached the Sunshine State, they had built up critical momentum, and Giuliani couldn't catch up.

Seaborn, the author of the New Year's Eve "history is ours" memo, and his other advisers clung to the strategy on which they had based everything: it was simply too late to reverse it.

Instead of flying to California yesterday in the hope that his national reputation would bring him victory on Super Tuesday, he flew there to declare he was quitting and to endorse McCain.

On the Tarmac at Fort Lauderdale on Monday evening, Giuliani was accompanied by the actor Jon Voight. Addressing a small band of supporters - outnumbered about two to one by reporters - he struggled with the microphone.

MTB News and Notes: A conversation with Greg Minnaar; New power at ...

Minnaar still managed to give a post-race interview, despite the pain.

Then, in the off-season, Minnaar learned that Honda was ending its sponsorship of the G Cross-Honda team, the squad Minnaar has led since 2005. Minnaar's understudy, teammate Matti Lehikoinen, inked a deal to lead Intense Cycle's team, but Minnaar remained without a team through much of the fall. Salvation came from the California-based Santa Cruz Syndicate team - for 2008, Minnaar will ride alongside the hard charging, hard drinking duo of Steve Peat and Nathan Rennie.

VeloNews caught Minnaar on the phone as he was heading into a house party near his home in Pietermaritzburg.

Bengals Have Palmer Brothers at QB

So far, Carson Palmer has had the more accomplished career, winning the Heisman Trophy at Southern California before becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 draft. He led the Bengals to the playoffs in 2005 before a severe knee injury temporarily set him back.

Jordan Palmer, who is five years younger, set school records at Texas-El Paso by throwing for 11,084 yards and 88 touchdowns. Washington drafted him in the sixth round last year, and he played in one preseason game before being waived Sept. 1.

He stayed in shape and hoped to get another chance in the NFL. When that didn't come, he signed with the Arizona Rattlers and was about to head there when the Bengals made their offer.

Cincinnati already has a No. 2 quarterback: Ryan Fitzpatrick, obtained from St.

Marvelous Myrtle Beach: Mild weather, few crowds make East Coast ...

After a two-hour drive north from Charleston, S.C., we arrived at our oceanfront Myrtle Beach hotel after sundown and went directly to the balcony. Spotlights from the hotel made the surf 14 stories below look like silvery ribbons crashing into the narrow beach. The next morning, the view was entirely different.Spread out before us was an expanse of hard-packed sand ---- perhaps 50 yards wide and infinitely long. Even from our perch, the northern and southern ends of the beach were not visible.

"It's not the West Coast," my husband, Jerry, mused, leaning over the balcony. "Who knew?"

A camel trek in the Eastern Desert

With seven natural protectorates and national parks, Sinai is an obvious starting point. The peninsula's natural beauty entices divers and trekkers alike with its abundant marine life and awesome mountainscapes. Ras Mohamed, stretching 850 square kilometers, has gained worldwide fame for its magnificent range of coral reefs and acts as an important stop for migratory birds. It is also a natural habitat for one of the rarest ibexes left on the planet — the Nubian Ibex.

Deep in the Sinai Mountains north of Ras Mohamed lies St. Catherine's. Known largely for it magnificent monastery, St. Catherine's was built to the order of Emperor Justinian between 527 and 565 AD and today stands as a UNESCO cultural and natural heritage site. Located at the footstep of another holy site — Mount Sinai — the ancient monastery contains priceless Arab mosaics as well as Russian and Greek icons.

Recapping the fourth quarter; housing, loan losses, high energy prices

The major equity indexes followed an erratic course during the fourth quarter, with both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 Index hitting record highs in early October, only to fall sharply after credit conditions appeared to deteriorate in early November. The market's decline bottomed out late in the month, but moved in a seesaw pattern, with considerable daily volatility, through December. The S&P 500 Index rose or fell by 1 percent or more in 19 out of 41 trading days, or almost half, in the final two months of the year - compared to just two days in the same 2006 period.

The end results, however, were only modest losses on most major equity benchmarks. The S&P 500 Index shed 3.33 percent during the quarter, but still showed a gain of 5.49 percent for the year.
