Malware Scanner, Web-Use Aid, Fun Garden

When it comes to computer security--and job security--why take risks? This month, I have a thorough but easy-to-use virus scanner, a Firefox productivity booster, and an engaging simulation game. The two freebies and the free trial also pose little peril to your pocketbook.

A Second (or Up to 32nd) Opinion

We gave a 2007 World Class award to the free online virus detection service VirusTotal.com, which scans files via dozens of third-party security programs (32 at last count, including big names such as McAfee and Panda). Now, you can skip surfing to VirusTotal.com's Web site; instead, run the service's equally free VirusTotal Uploader program, which is even easier to use than VirusTotal.com. Right-click the questionable file, select Send To, and choose VirusTotal from the send-to options.

Amanda in Boston: Yay! LOST is back this week! Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees! There is no point in me answering this question other than to let you all know I'm officially bouncing off the walls. (Boing. Boing. Hear that?) Finally something good to talk about!

Ella in Santa Monica, California: Will you be doing your Lost Redux again this year?Would I abandon you? I think not.

Hardware AMD Kills Quad FX Platform

I see the standard home proc being more along the lines of a mainframe style proc.Take for example this old mainframe proc.http://www.computermuseum.li/Testpage/CPU-Chip-Mai...Imagine each block being a seperate core and being capable of placing whatever style of processor you want. You can have 50 of them set to be a general cpu, 20 for gpu, 20 for physics, and 10 for system memory. Or you can simply customize it to whatever suits your needs. .

Renney wants to keep Rangers' goalies fresh

Henrik Lundqvist then would play tomorrow in Newark and in Montreal on Sunday.

After practice yesterday at the Spectrum, coach Tom Renney said he was "contemplating" using Valiquette (2-3-1, 2.73 GAA) rather than playing Lundqvist two consecutive nights as the Rangers (24-22-6) struggle to find traction in the Eastern Conference playoff hunt.

"Over the long haul, you're playing four in six and back-to-back and three in four," Renney said. "I think Henrik's looking much more in control of his game, so there's really no reluctance to do that, other than how much we're going to have to ride his back beyond this weekend. He's going to be absolutely essential to our run and I don't want to burn him out. I want him to be in a position to play as much of those as he possibly can.

3 file complaint on Xbox outage

Microsoft's Xbox Live network suffered some outages over the holidays, and the company offered subscribers a free arcade download as an apology. But that wasn't enough for three Texans, who filed a class-action lawsuit Friday against the company, alleging breach of contract.

The complaint describes the December outages that kept people from "accessing online play for several weeks. ... Xbox Live continues to deny subscribers access and has even issued apologies for their failure to correct server problems."

A Microsoft spokesman said via e-mail that the company "only recently learned of the lawsuit, so we are not in a position to comment at this time."

The complaint alleges that Microsoft's increased holiday Xbox sales would lead to a bump in Xbox Live subscriptions and game-play on its servers, but the company "failed to provide adequate access and service to Xbox Live and its subscribers."

Xbox Live users pay $30 to $50 a year for access to the gaming network.

Clapton and Police play Park gigs

Eric Clapton and The Police are to headline this year's Hard Rock Calling festival in London's Hyde Park.

Clapton will lead the first night of the two-day event and will be joined by special guests John Mayer and ex-girlfriend Sheryl Crow.

The Police will top the line-up on the second night, with KT Tunstall and Starsailor also on the bill.

The gigs are on 28-29 June with tickets on sale on 1 February. It is part of Hard Rock's Ambassadors of Rock Tour.

'Amazing'

The concert will mark Clapton's first headlining gig at Hyde Park for more than a decade.

"We are very excited about this year's Hard Rock Calling event as we have two amazing headline acts, following on the tradition from the past two years which saw Roger Waters, The Who, Peter Gabriel and Aerosmith perform," said Toby Leighton-Pope from organisers Live Nation.
