Correction: Because of reporting errors, several facts about the history of the Academy Award nominations were incorrect in a story in the Jan. 23 Living/Arts section about this year's nominations. Linda Hunt was the first woman nominated for playing a man, in "The Year of Living Dangerously," for which she eventually won the Oscar. The first time two people shared a nomination for best director was in 1961, when Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins won for co-directing "West Side Story." Actors nominated more than once for playing the same character were Bing Crosby, as Father O'Malley in "Going My Way" and "The Bells of St. Mary's"; Peter O'Toole, as Henry II in "Becket" and "The Lion in Winter"; and Al Pacino, as Michael Corleone in "The Godfather" and "The Godfather Part II." Correction: A Washington Post item in the Daily Briefing column on Monday's Nation page incorrectly said the current Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act authorization will expire on Friday.

My impression was therefore one of a country with limited freedoms and constrained access to information. However, my suspicion based on a much earlier visit was one of a society closer to the West than most might guess. As soon as I arrived it was clear that much of the debate and worry voiced in the West was in fact bogus. At no time, in any location, did I find myself unable to communicate freely by any mode I chose. I never had an incoming or outgoing, fixed or mobile phone call refused, terminated or limited in any way.

In June, Freeman placed first as a co-angler at the Bassmaster Elite event on Smith Mountain Lake. That is the back-seat, tag-along, gee-whiz level for anglers who aspire to be pro fishermen. On one hand, the disc shows him coming full circle — two songs are written with Jayhawk Gary Louris, one with Williams — and on the other hand, beginning anew — Blues was produced by proto-Americana and power-pop musician Ben Vaughn.
