Dream ride to Cape, but a nightmare driving home

For thousands of visitors, going to Cape Cod over Memorial Day weekend was much easier and more pleasant than heading home. The new $60 million flyover, which erased the hated rotary at the base of the Sagamore Bridge, smoothed Cape-bound travel on Friday and Saturday. But drivers returning from the Cape Monday found themselves in a worse-than-usual traffic nightmare, with backups that stretched as far as 17 miles to Yarmouth at midafternoon.

To avoid a repeat this summer, state transportation officials said yesterday they plan to install electronic signs urging vacationers to stagger their departure from the Cape as well as their arrival. Officials said they will also look at possible changes to the roadways around Exit 1, where Route 6A merges into Route 6 at the base of the bridge.

Warning on bond insurers frays nerves on Wall Street

The company also added two representatives from Warburg Pincus to its board and said an executive from Deutsche Bank would be leaving the board.

Investors in the stock market appear to have little faith in the insurers. Shares of MBIA and Ambac have plunged more than 80 percent in the last 12 months.

On Wednesday, Ackman released detailed estimates for losses on mortgage securities guaranteed by MBIA and Ambac, saying the estimates were based on conservative assumptions. He said the data, which he released online so it could be analyzed by other investors, would give lie to the companies' assertions that they only insured safe securities.

"Now it's a level playing field," Ackman said in a telephone interview. "We are putting it out there and we are saying don't rely on us.

Post Script: Beach businessman lived large, lived well and lived to ...

When he went to visit the Outer Banks for the first time, he left having signed a contract on a house. A big one, on the ocean.

Livelli was an Italian guy from New Jersey, a fit, vigorous, big-voiced man who filled a room with his presence.

He was a born salesman. He never went to college, he said, because it would have ruined him. His s htick was street smarts.

At 19, he borrowed $400 from his dad and started a company, selling businesses "advertorial" - paid-for articles - space in newspapers.

He'd talk people into his way - eventually. Not from sheer persistence, not by being annoying, but by the power of his conviction.

In time, his business became a lucrative, multistate affair: The Contract Companies.

At its peak, it had 300 employees.

Dec 28th

Well, it's almost time for me to head off to Australia. Tomorrow, actually, but this might be my last chance to get in a blog before then. I will try to blog while there but won't promise. Christmas is over and it was quite a pleasant one. My son visited from Las Vegas and he said he had a good time. It looks like he is set on going back to college full time to qualify as an accountant. He did one class last semester and got an A, so it looks like he should do OK in that field. He has quite a bit of money coming to him for education from the time he spent in the United States Air Force; at least enough for about two years of college. We spent Christmas Eve morning at my wife's parents then headed to Pensacola Beach, Florida to where my wife's sister and family live. Lots of gifts were handed around and we all ate and drank too much.

SMG and Freddie Hit the Waves Surfing

Sarah Michelle Gellar Prinze and Freddie must have gotten the memo that Hawaii is the place to be — the couple was spotted hitting the waves on New Year's Eve. Methinks they may have kissed their way into the new year despite some bumps and bruises from a day trying to surf. Hey, at least they both got up on the boards; nice job guys! While it looks like SMG could have left the non-waterproof mascara at home, at least she was in the right gear to keep herself from any embarrassing slip ups. How cute is Freddie laughing at her?
