Why is the Rusty Belmar Pro Such a Colossal event?

New Smyrna, Florida's Aaron Cormican took the Rusty Belmar Pro on Sunday, and pocketed $5,000. But, Cormican wasn' t the only one to leave Belmar with a big grin. In it's third year, the Belmar Pro has become a regular stop off for WQS heavies, and a must-see event for Jersey Surf fans. Thousands of people lined the shoreline at Belmar's Sixteenth Ave. beach, giving it a strangely 'CT feel. So, why is this Two-Star such a hit?

A Tasty Set of Waves

Double-overhead nor'easter conditions for round one in 2003, huge south lines in 2004, spitting head-high barrels to open 2005, ...this contest always has waves!

The reason the Belmar Pro is so successful is that the Eastern Surfing Association runs it at the height of the Atlantic Hurricane season.

Blog: Gadgets ASUS Goes For the Jugular with 2nd Gen Eee PC

ASUS confirms 7", 8" and 8.9" Eee PC; desktop variant on the way. ASUS has accomplished quite a lot in a short amount of time with its Eee PC sub-notebook. ASUS, which isn't exactly a household name outside of the tech community, managed to add a dash of spice to an otherwise slightly boring 2H 2007 with its hot seller.

Consumers have definitely won as they were introduced to a low-cost computer and many were introduced for the first time to a Linux-based operating system. Part of the reason why ASUS can offer the Eee PC at such a low price is the use of relatively outdated components like a 90nm 900MHz Celeron M processor and i910 chipset, meager amounts of NAND flash memory for storage and off-the-shelf DDR2 SODIMM modules.

There's also another major reason for the ASUS Eee PC's low starting price of $299: the use of Linux instead of Windows XP or Windows Vista.

Customize your Mac

In my case, my machine not only helps me create my various Macworld features, but it also pays the bills, writes letters to friends, updates our family's website, and can occasionally be found driving a race car or sneaking in a virtual round of golf.

Given how much time all of us spend on our Macs, it makes sense to make that time as enjoyable and productive as possible. After all, there's no law that says you have to use your machine exactly as Apple delivered it, right? From customizing your Mac's appearance, to teaching it some new tricks, to increasing your productivity, there are a number of things you can do to get the most out of your time with it.

The following Visual Tweaks, System Enhancers and Productivity Boosters are examples of some of those things.

Hapuna Beach leads the state in spinal-cord injuries

For years, Sandy Beach's unforgiving shore break has been known for broken necks and backs.

But the popular Oahu bodysurfing spot ranks only third among Hawaii beaches that saw the most spinal cord injuries in a six-year period ending in 2006.

Topping the list is Hapuna Beach on the Big Island, with 11 cases, followed by Waikiki, which had eight, according to data compiled by the Queen's Medical Center since 2001. Sandy's had seven incidents during that time.

Spinal cord injuries at Hawaii beaches have been rising, to 17 cases in 2006 from eight in 2001, figures show. It peaked in 2005, when 22 people damaged their spines while in the water.

While Waikiki's runner-up placing can be largely attributed to its 6.6 million visitors, Hapuna has all the qualities of a dangerous spot -- inviting medium-size waves breaking above a shallow, hard bottom.
