Orange pay TV on satellite

In November, Sky reported a record 14 per cent quarterly growth in subscribers to Sky+, up 323,000 on the previous quarter to 2.7 million. The service is now in almost a third of Sky homes, allowing viewers to skip through ads. Nonetheless the ad industry will also be buoyed by the news that two key demographics - 16- to 24-year olds and ABC1 viewers, have experienced a growth in impacts. Impacts for 16-24s increased by 1.5 per cent to 31 TV ads a day, while impacts for ABC1s increased by 3.6 per cent to 32 ads a day.

Thinkbox, the commercial TV marketing body, attributed the growth to digital TV penetration, which has now reached 85 per cent of UK homes, and the growing attraction of digital channels among viewers.

VOTE: What do you think of Warrington?

I think everyone is missing the point here, Warrington Town has become so violent over the years is disgraceful, not forgeting that saturday nights antics were caused by alcohol and Gary Newlove bless his soul was killed by yobs becuase of alcohol, this town needs a good bloody sorting out if you ask me and its about time we all face up to the fact that warrington is becoming more and more driven by people who go out to fight and cause trouble than having a good time, i'd rather in in my living room with a bottle of wine and a good dvd then enter our town centre again. Sky news stated an old couple were knocked to the ground because of a fight over a taxi by someone much younger than them, do people not look after each other anymore, not to mention respect each other. it disgusting. Sky news should be there every weekend and show the country exactly what a state the people of warrington are like under the influence of alcohol.

Windows Vista Making Geek Squad Rich?
Perhaps The VAR Guy pursued the wrong career. Hes blogging for free, but could be making $229 per hour or so thats nearly $460,000 a year troubleshooting Windows Vista PCs for his neighbors. That may sound a little far fetched. But check out this amazing math, using some quick cost estimates from The Geek Squad. Consumers are actually paying Geek Squad a hefty fee ($129 to $229) to set up and optimize their Windows Vista PCs.

East or West which is best?

I think this particular topic on your blog is written rather poorly. Usually you tend to make it more personal, presenting people's stories. Seeing that Kosovo's inevitable declaration of independence will affect people's lives greatly, why have you not tried to get more personal insight? Is it because you direct this blog to a mainly British audience? Or is it because this should be a pro-EU blog, no matter what? As you can see there's plenty non-Serbians that find this situation cruel and unfair. Good luck with your future entries...

Taking the kids: A winter trek in Yellowstone

Bison, for their part, were nearly extinct at the turn of the 20th century. Today, there are some 3,500 in the park.

We're having one of those I-can't-believe-what-we're-seeing moments, as we snowshoe on trails around Old Faithful on a cold but sunny winter afternoon. Did you know Yellowstone has more thermal features than anywhere in the world -- some 10,000 geysers, bubbling mud pots, hot springs and more. That's half of the world's hydrothermal features!

There's no better time to see them -- and the park's wildlife -- than winter when you won't be fighting the crowds. That's what we told Gertrude, another bison we encountered snowshoeing around the Geyser Basin. (Gertrude ignored us too.)

Consider that more than 15,000 people visit the park each day in summer, while all winter only 150,000 people visit.

OLD CHATHAM, N.Y. -- Amid unrefuted charges that the Pentagon is paying Iraqi journalists to write "good news" stories about the country's progress, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice has announced a new international exchange program for journalists named after famed broadcaster Edward R. Murrow and emphasizing "the democratic principles that guided Mr. Murrow's practice of his craft: integrity and ethics and courage and social responsibility."

Rice added, "We all know that the bedrock pillar of a free society is a free press and that it is crucial for the foundation of any democracy."

The new initiative - The Edward R. Murrow Journalism Program - is a partnership of the State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the non-partisan Aspen Institute, and the journalism schools of six American universities.

Smith to slash restrictions on police power

In a bid to pre-empt the government announcements next week, Cameron yesterday rushed out his own party's plans to relax the rules on stop and search. He said he would abolish routine "stop and account" forms used when police stop but do not search. They were introduced to protect ethnic minorities in the wake of the Macpherson report in 1999.

He added he would replace the foot-long stop and search forms, using instead an oral record taped at a police station. The two reforms would save 1.3m police hours spent on paperwork, he said.

Cameron also promised to increase police powers by empowering sergeants to authorise stop and search of any pedestrian and vehicle in a specified area for up to six hours, if they reasonably believe a serious crime has occurred or is about to occur. Currently only senior inspectors can authorise such blanket searches.

Residents demand action after sailor's death

They claimed that couples had driven their children to places such as Calshot Beach and dropped them off for the evening "with crates of booze".

Residents also alleged that underage drinkers were obtaining alcohol from some licensed premises in the area.

Chief Insp Gary Cooper, one of several police officers at the meeting, said 200 young people had been stopped over the summer and more than 220 vessels of alcohol confiscated.
