Making social networking pay - for users

Being paid to spend time on social networks sounds tempting, especially to those who spend hours surfing sites such as Facebook and MySpace. But can websites that promise to pay you for your time really deliver?

Debra Hunting is a user of the social networking website Yuwie.com. Like 400,000 other users, she is paid to read adverts, insert blog entries, upload photos and to mingle with friends and family online.

Hunting has just received her second cheque of $71 (£36) for her "December 2008 Xmas" kitty and is about to email her work colleagues inviting them to set up profiles. Her aim this month is to persuade a further 20 people to join so she can add another "nice amount" to her Christmas fund.

"My friend Jo referred me five months ago," she explains.

Fishermen question small role in oil spill cleanup

As frustrating as the loss of their Dungeness crab season would be, fishermen throughout the Bay Area found it difficult to be denied the opportunity to slow the damage to their fishery and the greater marine environment.

Eventually, the Port of San Francisco hired 20 San Francisco-based fishing vessels to assist the cleanup and paid them $3,000 per day for four days.

Ironically, MSRC, the private company that supplied most of the manpower, vessels, and oil-cleanup equipment in the oil spill, was also the company that provided oil-spill cleanup training to up to half the fleet of commercial fishermen along the Pacific Coast in the 1990s.

The annual training sessions ceased abruptly in 1999 without explanation, according to Zeke Grader, executive director of the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's Associations.

Movie Studio Deal, Ultra-Slim Laptop Wow Macworld Audience

According to Jobs, the tech giant has forged an alliance with all six major movie studios to offer just-released DVD films over high-speed Internet connections.

The service was launched in the U.S. Tuesday and will roll out internationally later this year.

The company will have more than 1,000 movies for online rental through iTunes by the end of February, with prices of $2.99 for older movies and $3.99 for new releases.

Users can watch instantly over a broadband Internet connection, or download and keep the movie for 30 days, with 24 hours to finish watching the movie once it's started.

Jobs also said the Apple TV console would no longer need a separate Mac computer in order to run properly.

New Ultra-Slim Laptop Unveiled

Jobs also took the wraps off a super-slim new laptop Tuesday, unveiling a tiny personal computer that is less than an inch thick and turns on the moment it's opened.

Anyone doubt Amazon is serious about music downloads now?

Web Technology Hollywood on Demand Apple Amazon DRM

Amazon announced Sunday that it plans an international rollout of its DRM-free MP3 music download service in a move that sets up a global scrap with Apple's iTunes service.

Is Amazon's service an iTunes killer yet? Not really. But there's no doubt about Amazon's intentions. I've downloaded more than a few DRM-free tunes from Amazon in recent weeks–most because I got a warning about burning more than seven CDs for a 5 year old's birthday party (there was two songs purchased on iTunes).

Without that little warning I probably wouldn't have tried Amazon's service.

Anglers come from all over to North Carolina for 50-pound bass

NAGS HEAD, N.C. For 150 years, the winter surf that creams off the Atlantic Ocean onto the islands called the Outer Banks has drawn anglers hoping to big striped bass, which often exceed 50 pounds here.

The arrival of huge stripers once was as predictable as the cold fronts that chilled the water to the 42-46 degree range that the bass, and the baitfish they eat, find most amenable.

Shark sightings force beach closures

Aerial Patrol general manager Harry Mitchell said sharks were sighted in a similar area last weekend. "Water temperatures are up and sharks are doing what they often do, come in closer in search of food," he said. "Beachgoers are urged to heed warnings from the aircraft and beach safety providers with shark sightings anticipated until at least March of next year." The beaches were closed while surfers and swimmers were called out of the water and the sharks driven off. Both beaches were reopened a short time later. Share this article .

Letters to the Editor for Jan. 31

When something like September 28th happens we should want to know the whole truth as that is our best hope of prevention, but rarely have we seen the truth sequestered as it has been in the Greg Wright case.

In a matter involving a teen we would expect a civilized society to be looking for reasons to salvage the life of a boy who harmed no one, even though he scared many. It is easy to lose sight of the part of us that is rational and faithful in the face of fear, and how we act when we have had time to reflect defines who we are.

A man was sentenced on the 22nd to 17 years in prison for trying to help terrorists acquire a 'dirty' bomb, which could possibly have killed hundreds of thousands with deadly radiation. A boy was sentenced on the 17th to 22 years in prison for wanting to kill himself and hoping someone .
