Blog Day Afternoon: Wednesday, Jan 30

Speaking of New York-Boston trash talking, The Blog Whisperer is still asking for your love and hate for both cities.

For everything you want or need to know about Johan Santana, check out mets4life.blogspot.com's blog. It covers everything from meaningful stats to the pitcher's security detail in Venezuela.

For everything you want or need to know about Tennessee basketball (seriously) recruiting, check out The DRs Corner.

The Hall of Fame Game is soon to be no mas. If you've ever sat in right field for the game, let Leading the League in Random be your guide down memory lane.

Like funny commercials? (Of course you do, there aren't any communists on these blogs). Anyway, The Words of Dezy shares its top 10. I was slayed by No. 3, 5, and 8.

Volunteer Basketball isn't talking about ...

Call me Ellie Mae Ellsworth

It had a Beautiful blend of white, gray and black. Healthy looking, with a thick full coat of fur. It moved effortlessly, going through the snow on the southeast side of the field. It stood in the area where they had logged last year. I turned my care, so my bright lights were shining in the area where it was standing. There was no traffic so I could watch it for awhile. It seemed to be alone. The full moon with it's light reflecting off the snow, a big timber wolf standing at a edge of a clearing, the shadow of the trees on the snow, it was a wonderful winter night. The loggers have cleaned up the areas around our home where they logged. They made sure, they did not leave any big ruts or they get fine for poor management after clear cutting. I will have new trails and roads to walk and take pictures.

India issues ultimatum to ICC

If one was to surf around the web accross to other parts of the cricket globe (outside the subcontinent ) the popular view is Australian cricketers are over the top when it comes to onfield behaviour. Ask the closest neighbours, the New Zealanders. They have a very negative view of Australian sport starting from the Greg Chapple issue. Australians may think its fun but Rest of the world not. Cricket is no longer a game, it's another work place. Would you accept sledging at work place ? Just because sledging and swear word is norm in Australia it doesn't mean ROW have to accept it. Cricket will no doubt disintergrate as it is no longer a game of sportsmanship. While India has to learn, the Australian cricketers are not helping the cause either.

Contact lenses with circuits, lights a possible platform for ...

Movie characters from the Terminator to the Bionic Woman use bionic eyes to zoom in on far-off scenes, have useful facts pop into their field of view, or create virtual crosshairs. Off the screen, virtual displays have been proposed for more practical purposes — visual aids to help vision-impaired people, holographic driving control panels and even as a way to surf the Web on the go.

The device to make this happen may be familiar. Engineers at the University of Washington have for the first time used manufacturing techniques at microscopic scales to combine a flexible, biologically safe contact lens with an imprinted electronic circuit and lights.

'Looking through a completed lens, you would see what the display is generating superimposed on the world outside,' said Babak Parviz, a UW assistant professor of electrical engineering.

Miami Film Festival unveils 25th lineup

The Miami International Film Festival, marking its 25th year celebrating celluloid art in South Florida, unveiled on Wednesday a program of industry panels, educational seminars, parties and a lineup of 163 features, documentaries and short films to be screened Feb. 28-March 9.

The festival, one of Miami's most enduring cultural institutions, will open with an immigrant's tale, La misma luna (Under the Same Moon), director Patricia Riggen's drama about a 9-year-old boy who leaves his native Mexico to reunite with his mother in America.

In addition to 10 world premieres, the festival will highlight several American debuts, including Flawless, director Michael (Il Postino) Radford's drama about a jewel heist hatched by a corporate executive portrayed by Demi Moore.

How to Recycle Less and Do More

What's exciting to me is how many companies now seem to have finally figured this out. Some — like Wal-Mart, which has received a lot of attention recently for its ambitious plans to reduce its environmental footprint — are companies that I would have never expected to be a part of this conversation when we launched Stonyfield 25 years ago. The fact that they are is creating an extraordinary opportunity to green our economy.

Incorporating reusable materials and equipment into a production operation like ours at Stonyfield is difficult but not impossible. An example of reuse is with the cardboard boxes that our plastic yogurt cups are shipped in. Over a decade ago we found a company that buys them from us — and re-sells them to clothing and auto parts manufacturers to ship their products.
