| Study finds children plagued by unwanted exposure to porn
NASHVILLE, Tenn. Peddlers of online pornography are stalking children with images of naked people and people having sex, according to a new study that found an increased number of children and teenagers being exposed to unsolicited pornography on the Internet. The study, which appeared in the February issue of the journal Pediatrics, found that 42 percent of Internet users ages 10 to 17 said they had seen pornography online during the past year, with 66 percent of those saying they had not sought out the images. Overall, 34 percent of minors responding to a telephone survey of 1,500 Internet users ages 10 to 17 said they had experienced unwanted exposure to online pornography. "More research concerning the potential impact of Internet pornography on youth is warranted, given the high rate of exposure, the fact that much exposure is unwanted, and the fact that youth with certain vulnerabilities, such as depression, interpersonal victimization, and delinquent tendencies, have more exposure," the journal noted.
You're right, we are a backwater - SA
However an Adelaide Advertiser online poll shows most agree with Mr Brumby. More than 60 per cent of more than 2500 respondents to the poll agreed with the Victorian Premier. Asked the question: Is Adelaide a backwater, 48 per cent of respondents voted: "Yes - we lag behind the eastern states''. A further 16 per cent voted: "Yes - but that's part of the appeal''. Some 27 per cent of people voted: "No - Brumby is a jerk''; while a further 7 per cent said: "No - look at how many major events are on at this time of year''. Mr Brumby said yesterday Victoria would end up as a "backwater'' like Adelaide if it didn't proceed with channel-deepening in Port Phillip Bay. Share this article What is this? .
City stabbing spawns crackdown
The 24-year-old was believed to have been set on during a night out at Darling Harbour on Saturday. As he lay in intensive care at St Vincent's Hospital yesterday - and another 20-year-old woman recovered at Sydney Eye Hospital after being hit in the face with a glass in a Wollongong pub fight - the State Government announced the start of a massive crackdown on anti-social behaviour. The latest crackdown, focused on the rail network and involved more than 200 police, is the eighth "high visibility" police operation revealed since Friday. Most are directed at tackling alcohol-related anti-social crime. Police investigating this latest bout of street crime were hunting those involved yesterday. Ambulance sources revealed the victim did not initially realise the extent to which he had been injured, despite blood on his hands.
Class 4! OT-7! Platinum Meritorious!
Some cities are blessed with great filmmakers. New York has Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, and Spike Lee. Baltimore has Barry Levinson, David Simon, and John Waters. But the good people of Boston have been deeply unlucky in this regard. Whether it's the city's clannish insularity, the fine-bore segregation of its neighborhoods, or the mix of effete, overeducated latte swillers and "gritty, working-class" knuckleheads, Boston has never translated well on film. But when it was announced that Ben Affleck was directing a film of the Dennis Lehane novel Gone Baby Gone, I was excited. For one thing, the novel was set in Dorchester, the "gritty, working-class" neighborhood where this overeducated latte swiller grew up. More importantly, though, back in 1997, Ben Affleck portrayed perhaps the most note-perfect Bostonian ever put on film, Will Hunting's sidekick Chuckie Sullivan.
Calling for Yahoo to get bold
Mitra and many others in Silicon Valley are rooting for Yahoo to roar back and capitalize on its status as the Web's most popular destination, if for no other reason than to keep Google in check. But, she said, she's not optimistic. "Yahoo has a great opportunity still because it has tremendous traffic and a tremendous brand," said Mitra, who posted her analysis on the popular technology blog GigaOM. "But it can't figure out what it wants to be when it grows up." A clear vision that plays to the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company's fundamental strengths is what investors want from co-founder Jerry Yang, who replaced Terry Semel as chief executive over the summer. But instead of defining a bold road map, Yang offered broad strokes: Yahoo would aim to become the starting point for Internet users and a must buy for advertisers.
