Michael Jackson: Deal to Save Him Won't Include Neverland
Without Neverland to fall back on, Jackson technically would be homeless. He still owns his parents' home in Encino, Calif., but it's filled with relatives. Jackson also has a $4 million mortgage on that piece of property. The former pop star is renting a home in the Washington, D.C., area close to his manager and publicist, Raymone Bain, whom many close to Jackson are holding responsible for getting him deeper into the current financial woes. "Neverland is Raymone's problem. Let her solve it," is the way one insider to the financial situation put it to me on Monday. First Report: Alicia Keys' New Album, 'As I Am' Here's the first report/review of Alicia Keys' third studio album, "As I Am," which was made available late Monday. To say it's spectacular is an understatement.
Love all things surfing? Then blast off to Cocoa Beach, Fla.
I'm standing in the aisle of the main sales floor, watching a clerk restocking shell-covered jewelry boxes. She stops to help a customer looking for flamingo-themed wind chimes. They are temporarily out of stock this time of year -- they are a popular Christmas item -- but she promises to have them by week's end. Not only will they get them in, there will probably be three or four models to choose from; clerk and customer know that if they could be found anywhere, this would be the place. As the sales person says, "Ron Jon speaks for itself." New Jersey, 1959: Ron DiMenna has a developed and growing passion for surfing. He has tired of his homemade surfboards and wants to order his own custom California board. His father advises, "Buy three, sell two at a profit, then yours will be free." He does just that, and in 1961, opens a little surf shop in Long Beach, N.J.
A voyage to the edge of the world: Tasmania
I'd made a wrong turn. We were close, but we were lost and about to miss the sunset. I pulled over to ask directions. It occurred to me as I rolled down the window to hail a stranger that a dubious sailor on the Santa Maria might have asked Columbus this same question. ''Excuse me,'' I said to the woman in a wool cap. ``Do you know where the Edge of the World is?'' She didn't blink. She just pointed back to the main road and said, ``Take the next right. Can't miss it.'' My wife, Pam, and I had set out for this place -- the far western tip of Tasmania -- with a sense of adventure, an occasionally misread road map and a wild hair I'd brought from halfway across the globe. We had managed to tack six days onto a business trip to Melbourne last August, which didn't leave us much time to see Australia.

The two-story 20,000-square-foot restaurant features three bars, an airplane hanging from the ceiling, fishing boat booths and a gift shop. It sells everything from shirts and sandals to mini surf boards. .
NYE around the nation
Fireworks were cancelled at Surfers Paradise, Southport and Coomera on the Gold Coast, while a display at Paradise Point was postponed until a later date. In Sydney, large crowds of people started gathering early at vantage points along Sydney Harbour to watch the city's New Year's Eve pyrotechnic spectacular at 9pm and midnight. The crowd was expected to swell to a million people by midnight. Families began staking out prime vantage points from first light today, City of Sydney creative director Wayne Harrison said, while some had even camped out overnight. The pyrotechnic show included 20,000 effects being fired from Sydney's Harbour Bridge. "For the kids who are watching ... you might be able to depict our version of Bart Simpson when you hear the Simpsons' music and you see something darting around ...
April 2007
So one year, instead of saying goodbye to the birds, as I had in the past, I followed them south on their epic migration down the East Coast to Cuba and beyond. My trip kicked off on September 9, 2004, with a visit to a nest at Gray’s Beach in Yarmouth. As soon as I pulled into the parking lot and stepped out of the car, I heard it: the high-pitched kew kew kew that means osprey. Soon I was looking through my telescope at a bird standing on a nest above the marsh, ripping into a fish dinner. The bird’s brown-spotted necklace suggested it was a female, and its checkered feathering and orange eyes identified it as just-fledged. The bird’s huge talons pinned the flounder, and as it ate, it established a familiar osprey rhythm: dipping down to tear at the fish, then lifting its head back up before slurping strands of pink insides like spaghetti.
