Reading's Laura Marling is among 2008's crop of much-hyped female solo acts. Her debut album has been influenced not by vintage soul acts, as the likes of Adele, Duffy and Amy Winehouse have been, but apparently by the likes of outsider acts such as Kimya Dawson, Kristen Hersh, Herman Dune and The Delgados. It is a record more sparse and reflective than one might realistically expect from a teenager, the bonus being that it is quite brilliant, more rewarding with every listen. Rating 4/5 (Review by John Skilbeck) 2) Duke Spirit - Neptune: This five-piece wear their influences on their sleeve - the cover features the band members holding up a portrait of Ronnie Spector, a folk album, two guitars and a toy bird whistle. Liela Moss's soulful vocals are also to the fore, with both PJ Harvey's blues howl and Sioixsie's feline vocals an obvious influence.
