In an ElectionYear, Mum's the Word about Gun Control

This result has produced a sea change in criminological opinion. As a young criminologist, Prof. Hans Toch of the State University of New York believed that "reducing the availability of the handgun will reduce firearms violence."

Thirty years of research later, he repudiated that: "When used for protection firearms can seriously inhibit aggression and can provide a psychological buffer against the fear of crime. Furthermore, the fact that national patterns show little violent crime where guns are most dense implies that guns do not elicit aggression in any meaningful way. Quite the contrary, these findings suggest that high saturations of guns in places, or something correlated with that condition, inhibit illegal aggression." [Toch, "Research and Policy: The Case of Gun Control," in Psychology and Social Policy, edited by Peter Sutfeld and Philip Tetlock (NY Hemisphere, 1992).]

WAR UPDATE: DEVELOPMENTS

Rising Iraqi oil production and higher world oil prices could mean a multibillion-dollar windfall to help Baghdad rebuild, a report out today says. But insurgent violence still hobbles the country's $114 billion reconstruction effort and the possible flood of new money makes it more important than ever that Iraqis fight corruption, the quarterly report by the special inspector general for reconstruction says. It notes civilian workers have died - seven in the past quarter - since the U.S. began the reconstruction effort.

Glitteratti shine at the SAG Awards

After stealing the best supporting actor prize for Javier Bardem, it went on to take the award for an ensemble cast.

Many people questioned whether Senator McCain could win a closed GOP contest, as up to now he had won in New Hampshire and South Carolina through the assistance of crossover voting from Democrats and independents. Those questions have now been answered, at least in Florida.

What does this mean for the Super Tuesday contests coming up in a week? It appears that the race has narrowed down to McCain and Romney. McCain will enter February 5th with more delegates, but only 10% of what he needs to win the nomination. He will have a great deal of momentum and credibility, and Romney will have relinquished some. Almost certainly, McCain becomes the favorite to win the nomination.

However, Romney has a better national organization and more resources to run in 21 states simultaneously.

Search Letters to the Editor:

He was right, and it was one of my earliest lessons in building some self-confidence. Charlie always made you feel special, like he had all the time in the world to help you.

Paul was my coach for five years between Little and Pony leagues at both New Middletown and Corydon. He taught his players how to play correctly, how to be competitive and, above all, how to have fun while playing. Unlike most Little League coaches today, he coached many teams that did not have any of his own children as players. He coached because he loved people and baseball.

Charlie passed away on Nov. 7, Paul on Dec. 27.

Lary, Gary, Terry, Steve, Kim and Barb, thank you for sharing your dads with me. My life is better for having known both men. They were great role models for my generation.
