Surf's up: With a lesson, you can have fun from the start

There's no reason to laze on a Hawaiian beach like a sunning monk seal, watching wild, bronzed athletic types surf up a storm. Wouldn't it be great to come back from Hawaii and brag that you, too, caught a couple of gnarly waves?

Even at a beginner's level, surfing in Hawaii is a thrill. The warm air, lush green coastline, clear water and the sensory rush of gliding atop a wave make surfing a terrific adventure. But trust me: First get a lesson.

With an instructor, you'll have fun the first time out. You will learn essential safety, where to stand on the board, where to look, how to negotiate a wave and how to stay out of riptides and reefs. You'll even learn how to fall so you don't crack open your noggin.

For my surfing adventure, I took a lesson on Oahu's North Shore at Turtle Bay Resort from Hans Hedemann, an instructor who competed on the world surfing tour for 17 years.

Fisherman reported missing at Pago Bay

The U.S. Coast Guard was called to respond to a report of a missing fisherman in the waters off Pago Bay. According to the Lieutenant Lee Putnam, seas were breaking at about six and a half feet, noting that Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 was dispatched and conducted an aerial search of the area. Rescue personnel and medics from the Guam Fire Department also rushed to the scene.GFD spokesperson Angel Llagas told KUAM News that a report came into the island's 911 emergency service at around 5:20 Tuesday afternoon, as a man reported that he was fishing with his friend, and the latter had gone missing. While he made it to shore, the man noticed his friend was standing on the reef and then disappeared into the water. For the time being the National Weather Service has issued a high-surf advisory as well as a small craft advisory to remain in effect until Wednesday.

You big, boozy, lazy, beautiful Brits – I love ya

My friend Joe has become a life coach. "It’s about setting goals and achieving them," he says as we sit in a cheap Mexican dive in Manhattan. "You make a list of things you want to do, and we meet once or twice a week — or over the phone —to see if you’re any closer to fulfilling them."

A life coach is considered – usually by the coach himself — to be an expert in "self-actualization", a creature designed to aid you in attaining contentment, personal fulfilment and lots of money. All of this, I’m thinking, leads to that elusive place called happiness. I can tell it’s working for Joe, because he’s happy telling me about it. Now he’s telling me about "assessing negative behaviours", the kind that create "obstacles for success".

I know Joe means well, but I want to throw him into the river.

Macworld.ars: Ars Technica keynote live coverage info

Four out of four members of your Macworld.Ars team have arrived in San Francisco, and you know what that means. Tomorrow morning is the keynote we've all been waiting for, and your intrepid team here at Infinite Loop will be sitting in the audience to provide our readers with up-to-the-second live coverage. This year, as in years past, we will be again hosting an IRC channel to be updated from the audience—our IRC server is located at irc.arstechnica.com, and the updates will be posted to the #mwsf channel (in addition to the front page of the site). There are number of options for connection to IRC, but I personally recommend Colloquy, Linkinus, or X-Chat for the GUI crowd. For the command-line commandos out there, give Irssi a shot. On Windows, there's mIRC, Trillian, and a whole host of others that I'm not familiar with. As a point of note, this channel will be moderated, and you will not be able to add to the discussion. For those who want to gab about the keynote, feel free to also join our #macintosh channel where a lively discussion always takes place.

Edward Kennedy lashes out at Clintons and backs Barack Obama

Indeed, his lack of social skills , civility, and cry-baby attitude would compell me to turn him down even if he appled to work at McDonald's. How can a man like that talk to other foreign leaders? At this crucial moment in the decline of American prestige, Please, please, I know we must do better.
