Stockton artist's port photographs to be shown at Haggin
Pereira's photos capture the majesty of the ocean and the ships that ply it, the natural serenity of a port in morning and the deeply abiding connections between sailors and the sea. Taken together, "Deepwater Steel" offers a look at a lifestyle that has informed Stockton's identity since its earliest days. Fumbles make Madden maddening; Spider-Man weaves web of frustration
Usually, I round up the worst video games of the year. But why should I bash Transformers and other lackluster titles at this point? Most bad games don't sell well and are already forgotten. What is more important now — the slowest period of the year for new releases — is to look ahead to 2008, and to chronicle the disappointing moments of 2007, in hopes that game makers will stop doing stupid stuff now and then.MaddeningfumblesMadden NFL '08 looks beautiful. It plays sweet, mostly. But '08 came with more fumbles and interceptions than ever. Defenses are beefed up. Offenses have buttery fingers. This makes things more realistically challenging, because you can't toss ill-advised passes without repercussions. Fine. Sure. Whatever. I haven't played this Madden much. Don't plan to. .
Dengue Fever: the most infectious band
Dengue fever is a Los Angeles band featuring a Cambodian-born singer and five American alt-rockers who regularly embarrass her onstage. On the cover of its new album, Venus on Earth, the guitarist Zac Holtzman, with a long beard and goggles, drives a scooter with the vocalist Chhom Nimol sitting demurely behind him sidesaddle, the way a good Cambodian girl would ride through the streets of Phnom Penh. Dengue Fever, which specializes in an unlikely mix of 1960s Cambodian pop, rock and other genres, is a lot like that image. Propriety and smart aleck indie rock race by, blurring together. It is a band of rollicking lightness that keeps coming up deep. At a recent show in the Echo Park neighborhood here, the male members were downright goofy, but Chhom, singing mostly in Khmer and dressed in shimmering Cambodian silk garments she designs herself, looked like old-school royalty, a queen before the hipoisie.
Women's Basketball | Late three lifts Baylor to victory
Angela Tisdale used a screen from Rachel Allison to get into the corner for a three-pointer with 19 seconds left and Baylor held on for a 61-60 victory over No. 25 Texas on Wednesday night. Baylor (19-1, 7-0 Big) won its 12th straight game and matched the 1975-76 team for the best overall start in team history. Tisdale, the only player left from Baylor's 2005 national-championship team, had shot only 9 of 41 from the field in her past six games against the Longhorns. She was 6 for 12 with 19 points this time. "This felt good," Tisdale said. "I know we didn't play that good, but to win that game under those circumstances felt good." Texas (15-6, 3-4 Big 12) had a chance at winning the game, but Kathleen Nash's shot with 3.4 seconds left was blocked by Danielle Wilson.

Braves considering Kotsay or Patterson for CF?
With Crisp, the Braves would have to give up some talent (not sure how much) in a trade, and then would owe him at least $11 mill over two years ($10.5 mill in salary over the 2008-09 seasons, plus a $500,000 buyout of a 2010 option). Kotsay will make $8 mill in 2008 before becoming a free agent. I'm guessing the Braves would require Oakland to pay close to half of that figure before Atlanta would give up anything of value in a trade for Kotsay. He's coming off an injury-shortened, career-worst season (.214-1-20 in 56 games), but did hit .275 or higher in more than 500 at-bats each of the previous three seasons, with 37 total homers and 204 RBIs in that stretch. He's an excellent defensive CF and a strong leader and clubhouse presence, described everwhere he's been as a great teammate who, whenever he's in the lineup, plays all-out, without regard for his battered body and chronic back.
Former Disney stars are making 'Mickey' proud
It was called "The All New Mickey Mouse Club," but a better title might have been Tomorrowland. During its 1989-96 run, the Disney Channel variety series delivered a major peek into Hollywood's future. Few could predict that its stable of kids -- including Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Keri Russell and Britney Spears -- would morph into Oscar-caliber actors, Grammy-winning singers and celebrity heavyweights. What made an innocuous kids show such a magic kingdom for talent? Who better to ask than the casting director who discovered them all? .
