BUZZY TRENT: RIP

Buzzy Trent, a fearless North Shore waterman, passed away in his sleep on September 27th at age 77. Trent, who is most noteworthy for charging mammoth sized Makaha, appears to have died of natural causes.

Trent was born in San Diego in 1929 but raised in Santa Monica where he began bodysurfing at age 12. He also delivered newspapers along Highway 101. On his route, he witnessed lifeguard Chuck King surfing, and the next day, he procured a solid redwood board. He hitched the 127-pound plank to a wagon behind his bike and pedaled to Malibu, where his love for surfing began.

After unofficially winning a yacht race on a catamaran, Trent settled in Hawaii. He soon began riding the biggest waves he could find, choosing Makaha and Waimea as his ultimate arenas. His trademark was to sit furthest out at Makaha and stroke into some serious bombs, serious enough to snap his leg like a twig on one unfortunate occasion.

Women's groups get credit for Fort Worth stock show's success

The Junior League is among the women's organizations that play a formidable role in the stock show, which has long had a reputation as a boys-only club.

Another women's group entrenched in the stock show is Ladies on the Lamb. This nonprofit organization was founded in 2000 to buy lambs at auction raised by youngsters participating in the Junior Livestock competition.

"I attended the auction the year before we organized and noticed that the grand champion steer sold for $100,000, and the grand champion lamb only sold for $4,000," said Rebecca Pearce, founder and president of Ladies on the Lamb. "That wasn't right."

At the time, lambs were the only group that didn't have a sponsorship organization.

Now the group of about 20 women is affiliated with the Fort Worth Stock Show Syndicate, the organization that pays thousands of dollars each year to buy steers, pigs and goats at auction from the youngsters who raise them on their own or through 4-H and FFA clubs across the state.

Nation briefs

Hoping to snap out of a financial malaise, Yahoo is preparing to lay off as many as 1,000 workers in the Sunnyvale-based company's biggest purge since it was scrambling to survive the dot-com bust seven years ago. Cost-cutting like that normally makes investors happy, but Wall Street wasn't in a celebratory mood after Yahoo reported a 23 percent drop in its fourth-quarter profit and provided a tepid outlook for 2008.

10 things to know about Biketoberfest 2007

Tens of thousands of motorcycles will be roaring through Volusia County starting today for the annual Biketoberfest. The 15-year-old event, a little leather-clad brother to bigger Bike Week in March, is based in Daytona Beach but has now spread throughout the county and beyond. Whether you're crazy for choppers or choppers make you crazy, here's the top 10 things you need to know about the four-day bike rally:

1. Tattoos.

For the first time, the folks behind Biketoberfest are offering a memento that will last far longer than a mug or a T-shirt. Staff members at Ormond Beach's Asylum Studios, who also happen to be the official tattoo artists of the event, will be ready to brand your body with the event's stylized logo and the words "Biketoberfest 2007." Confused about where to put your souvenir tattoo? You're on your own.

Griffin's quick return, UConn's shorthanded effort highlight week

The Aggies have new life after beating Oklahoma State on the road.

- Memphis at Houston, Wednesday: The Tigers have a few hurdles to get over before going undefeated. This is one of them.

- Indiana at Wisconsin, Thursday (ESPN, 9 p.m. ET): Both teams lost last Saturday, taking a bit of the steam out of this one. But the Hoosiers lost out of conference so a win here would certainly give them an edge in the race for the title.

- Arizona at USC, Thursday: This is a matchup between two of the surging teams in the country. Don't be surprised to see either one of these squads during the second weekend in of the tournament.

- Dayton at Rhode Island, Saturday: This could be a classic A-10-type bubble game if there isn't room for both in the Dance.

ABC's Shipman Slams Linda Tripp on Lewinsky Anniversary

Half a decade after observing the fifth anniversary of the Monica Lewinsky scandal, "Good Morning America" correspondent Claire Shipman filed a report on Monday's show that commemorated ten years since the event. Shipman used the January 21 piece to take a swipe at Lewinsky-gate figure Linda Tripp, snidely labeling her "that questionable, tape-recording friend" and pointing out that she "has remade her face and her life." After observing that Tripp has since opened a store selling Christmas trinkets in Virginia, Shipman mused, "Atonement? Simply irony? Who knows?"

During the fifth anniversary segment, on January 16, 2003, this same GMA reporter appeared dismissive of the Lewinsky scandal. She claimed, perhaps hopefully, "It may be, especially in this newly-sobered world, that the Lewinsky episode, as riveting as it seemed at the time, will have little lasting impact, will be little more than a memorable footnote in our political life." A similar tone pervaded Shipman's report on Monday when she described the event as the "national political episode that a decade later, and in a post-September 11th, Iraq-dominated world, seems surreal."

Drew and Justin Can't Keep Their Hands Off Each Other

Justin is a special guest star in the movie about stand up comedians on the road. So yes, Vince was there along with some of his buddies like Jason Bateman and John Favreau but much of the focus was on Drew and Justin and their matching grins. Don't get me wrong, Drew is one of my favorites so it's great to see her happy, but I'm still not sure she has found the one, or shall I say the fourth?
