Teen swept off Mugu Rock into sea

VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - The search will resume Sunday for a 17-year-old boy swept off Mugu Rock by a wave into the ocean.

Officials say the Oxnard teen's family watched him disappear into the water while he was fishing just before noon on Saturday.

Divers, lifeguards and Coast Guard personnel searched for the boy, but were eventually forced to stop because of high surf. The surf was reportedly 6 to 8 feet high.

India in black and white

His career as an artist and activist ignited. Following his journey to East Africa, Sheikh continued to pursue his goal of unveiling intercultural conflict within displaced communities throughout the world. He interviewed survivors of the Soviet occupation in Afghanistan, indigenous peoples of Pantanal and Brazil and immigrants infiltrating into the United States from Mexico.

The exhibit at the University Art Museum, on view through Jan. 6, focuses on the last two of Sheikh's five published volumes of photographs: "Moksha" (2005) and "Ladli" (2007). In the earlier book, the images and accompanying text illustrate the plight of India's dispossessed widows and their desire to reach Moksha, or heaven. In Vrindavan, a northern Indian city that is believed to be the gateway to Moksha, Sheikh absorbed the tragedies of the women's pasts.

Time Change Bug Hits Some Alltel Phones

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- Most of the country moved their clocks back one hour when daylight saving time ended Sunday, but some Alltel Corp. customers saw their cellular phone clocks jump forward an hour instead.

Alltel spokesman Andrew Moreau said the glitch affected some customers in Little Rock; Panama City and Tallahassee, Fla.; Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C.; and Richmond, Va. He said those using phones operating on the carrier's high-speed EVDO wireless network experienced the jump ahead.

Moreau said the problem rested with the switches that handle calls or send new software to the cellular phones. He said workers were still examining the problem.

"We did have a glitch this morning," Moreau said. "It's all repaired."

Cellular towers provide the time to the phones.

Networking Site Loop’d to Seek Sports Fans

In the nascent marketplace of social networking, San Diego-based Loopd Network is taking a sharpshooters approach, as opposed to the shotgun strategy of MySpace.com, the major player in the space.

First off, social networking describes Web sites that provide an online forum for sharing and connecting with a focus on members mainly in their teens and early 20s.

One recent survey found that 55 percent of teenagers with Internet access created online profiles and 55 percent used social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook.

Loopd founder and Chief Executive Scott Tilton says that while these sites are certainly much larger, his site is the first focused only on sports, an area growing at a much faster clip.

Were just taking that opportunity and applying it to sports because nobody else is doing it, and were bringing a full-blown community aspect to the sports industry that doesnt exist today, Tilton said.

Aussie behind success of Pixar studios

About an hour's drive north-east of San Francisco, across the Bay Bridge and through a maze of residential streets so confusing the city's best cabbies get lost, sits Pixar Animation Studios.

It is an animated film fan's Mecca.

Stand at the front gates and peer through the steel and brick fence shielding it from overzealous fans, you feel like little Charlie Bucket looking at Willy Wonka's mysterious chocolate factory.

The 1,000 employees in the modern, 20,000 square metre glass and steel complex are responsible for some of the most loved and profitable animated films of all time, beginning with Toy Story in 1995 and followed by A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars and this year's favourite for the best animated film Oscar, Ratatouille.

A handmade home

To wash, one goes across the property to the bathhouse, where the solar-heated shower is a length of chopped hose but the windows are stained glass. A small plot with a low fence and a tin roof serves as the outhouse and smells fresher than most New York City restrooms. If a woman wishes to urinate, she finds an AstroTurf-free plot of ground and does so watchfully, given what happened to the dog. After the tour, Livant sits down in the Hippodome's kitchen, her daughter perched behind her on the free-form counter, and tells her story.

She was 45 years old, married and living in Westport, Connecticut, when Kahn came into her life. Her husband was a psychologist named Saul Ader; there were two children, Wendy and Peter. They lived in an 18th-century house and owned a Volvo and a Saab.
